Birth Indexes

Birth Indexes, Cambria County

1893-1903

These indexes were compiled by volunteers Sandy Lewis and Shelby McHenry. It is the property of the Cambria County Library and cannot be downloaded or reproduced elsewhere without the library’s written permission.

Pennsylvania did not record births on a state-wide level until 1906. Prior to 1906 Cambria County recorded births on the county level from 1893-1903. Those records have been microfilmed, and these indexes reference them and includes the name of the child and its sex, the name of the father and mother, their residence, the child’s date of birth, and the volume and page number where the record is recorded.

Indexing handwritten documents can be challenging, so the following items are of note:

Green indicates a difference in spelling of the surname, either from child to parents, parent to parent or sometimes all three.

Red indicates suspicion in the birthdate, for example, the date recorded is before the date of birth.

Yellow indicates that the information was recorded and then a line drawn through it, sometimes reading “error”.

An asterisk (*) indicates that the child’s surname is listed but the parent’s, for whatever reason, is not.

The actual records can be viewed on microfilm in the library (or a digital/paper copy pulled by a reference librarian for a $5 fee).
