Your friends at Highland Community Library are ready to welcome you back into our building! Beginning August 22, you can make an appointment for the whole family to enjoy their own personal Highland experience. Browse the stacks, use a computer, and get expert help and recommendations from our staff without the hassle of lines or crowds, and with the comfort of knowing that we’re taking extra precautions to keep you and your family safe.

Picking up a hold, or just prefer to stay in your car? We’ve got you covered! Curbside services will continue Monday through Saturday to ensure that you can get the items you need.

Please note: Masks are required for ALL patrons over 2 years of age entering the library. If your mask does not cover your nose and chin, you are considered to be maskless and will be reminded once by library staff to adjust your mask. If you are not wearing your mask properly after a reminder, you may be asked to leave. 

If you cannot or choose not to wear a mask, you may make an appointment for curbside pickup, and staff can assist you over the phone. 

Please be mindful of social distancing with library staff during your appointment.

 

 There are three types of appointments available: 

  • Browsing Appointments (browsing and checking out library materials)
  • Computer Appointments (computer use, printing, and photocopying)
  • Highland To-Go Appointments (retrieving holds through curbside pickup)

We will be adding days and appointment times to these services based on demand.

Browsing Appointments

Browsing Appointments are available on Tuesdays from 10 am – 1:30 pm and Saturdays from 9 am to 12:30 pm. You can choose an appointment for 15 or 30 minutes. During your appointment, you can roam the stacks, get recommendations from library staff, and check out any library materials except those in the Library of Things collection. Please make sure to leave a few minutes before the end of your appointment to check out materials. 

Computer Appointments

Computer Appointments are available on Thursdays from 2 pm – 5:30 pm. Appointments for our public computers last 30 minutes. During your appointment, you can use the computer, print, scan, and make photocopies. Free Wi-Fi is available in the library’s parking lot and on the outdoor patio, which is open for use any time.

We will do the best we can to help you during your computer appointment remotely from the circulation desk. More complex computer help that involves close staff/patron contact may not be available at this time, but we will do the best we can to assist you with what you need.

Highland To-Go Appointments

Highland To-Go, our curbside pickup service, will continue to be available for patrons on the following days:

  • Monday – Wednesday, 10 am – 2 pm
  • Thursday, 10 am – 6 pm
  • Friday 10 am – 2 pm
  • Saturday 9 am – 1 pm

You can place a hold on materials in our online catalog and a staff member will contact you when your hold is ready to schedule your pickup appointment, or call the library at 814-266-5610 ext. 305 to place your holds with staff and schedule your pickup appointment at that time.

When you arrive to pick up your materials, please park in front of the library and pop your trunk or open your back door. Library staff will come out with your materials and place them in your trunk or back seat. PLEASE STAY IN YOUR CAR! We will wait until you’re in your car before bringing items out to you.

If you can’t make your originally scheduled appointment, please call us and let us know so we can reschedule you and open up your appointment time to another patron. If you miss two appointments without notification, your curbside privileges may be revoked.

Frequently Asked Questions

What precautions are being taken by the library to prevent the spread of COVID-19?

Your health and safety is our number one concern, which is why we’ve chosen to open by appointment. We have a small staff, and we want to ensure that appropriate cleaning measures are taken between each appointment. All high-touch surfaces are cleaned between appointments, and we are staggering the use of our two public restrooms to clean thoroughly after each use. Materials handled by patrons will be placed on a cart for sanitation, and all returns are quarantined for 72 hours before they are handled by library staff and returned to the shelves. A hand-sanitizing station is located in front of the circulation desk as well as throughout the building, and disposable gloves are available for patron use.

Staff will be properly masked and social distancing, and all patrons entering the library over the age of 2 years MUST wear a mask properly during their ENTIRE visit, including any time spent using a computer. This is to ensure the safety of our staff, as well as the next patrons coming in for an appointment.

What are my options if I can’t wear a mask?

If you cannot wear a mask, you may use our Highland To-Go Curbside Pickup service to retrieve library materials. Library staff is available over the phone to help you find and hold the materials you need, and you can schedule an appointment for contactless pickup. If you need additional help choosing books, try our new Book Match service. Fill out the form and a library staff member will make a personalized recommendation just for you. You can also email us at highland@cclsys.org if you need information printed and pick up your prints via curbside pickup.

 

Where should I return my books?

You can return your library materials any time in our outdoor book drop, located on the side of our building. All returned materials are quarantined for 72 hours before they are handled by staff, checked in, and returned to the shelves. We will not accept returns during any appointments.

 

I returned my books, but they are listed in my online account as late. Help!

Don’t worry! Because we are quarantining all returned items for 72 hours, your items will not appear on your account as “returned” for at least three days after they have been returned. We are backdating each day’s returned items, so when they are checked in, delinquent status and fines will disappear from your account. Feel free to contact the library with any questions or concerns about late materials.

 

Can I schedule a Browsing Appointment to pick up my hold?

If you have placed a hold on materials and just need to pick them up, please schedule a Highland To-Go Curbside Pickup appointment. This frees up our browsing appointments for patrons who want to search the library for their books. 

 If you have placed a hold but would still like to browse, you can pick up your hold when you come for your Browsing Appointment. Please inform the library staff member who contacts you about your hold that you would like to make a Browsing Appointment.

 

How long until the library reopens for normal operations?

Unfortunately, we don’t have a definitive answer on this just yet. We are closely monitoring the county’s daily COVID-19 numbers and making data-informed choices about library operating procedures. It is vital to our mission that we protect our most vulnerable patrons. Given our staffing levels, the size of our building, and the popularity of the library in our community, at this time we feel the best way for us to fulfill our mission is to operate by appointment, taking every precaution while continuing to provide high-quality library services to our community.
