The boys’ freedom is tempered by trying to avoid the attention of Trio Diablo, a menacing gang of teenagers. Their summer soon changes when they venture into the hollow on the other side of the hill. November 23, 2012 - Cambria County Library invites you to join an informal conversation about the “Books that Shaped America” on Tuesday, November 27, from 4:30 to 7:30 in the front lobby of the library.

Catcher in the Rye, Fahrenheit 451, The Cat in the Hat, Joy of Cooking. These books, along with 84 others, appear on a list of “Books that Shaped America” as compiled by the Library of Congress.  According to James H. Billington, the librarian of Congress, “This list is a starting point.  It is not a register of the ‘best’ American books - although many of them fit that description.  Rather the list is intended to spark a national conversation on books written by Americans that have influenced our lives, whether they appear on this initial list or not.“ Many of the books will be on display in the lobby and librarians will be on hand to hear your views if you would like to share them.

This program promotes civic literacy and illustrates the library’s participation in the PA Forward / Pennsylvania Libraries initiative.  The purpose of the initiative is to advance Pennsylvania and its citizens through five literacies – basic literacy, information literacy, financial literacy, civic literacy and health literacy. For more information, contact Mary Lou Repsher or Christine Goch at the library:  814-536-5131.

September 12, 2011 - September’s selection is Lives Like Loaded Guns: Emily Dickinson and Her Family's Feuds, by Lyndall Gordon. Despite a host of books about Dickinson and her work, Lives Like Loaded Guns is full of surprises regarding the poet's life and influences. Although Gordon reaches for conclusions to some of the bigger questions--among them Dickinson's possible epilepsy, her love life, and the complicated relationship she had with her brother, Austin, his wife, and his mistress (who aspired to edit the poet's work)--the author's research into Dickinson's medical records and correspondence breathes fresh air into otherwise settled literary history. In the end, no one disputes that Dickinson lived largely in a world of her own making. So much the better, Gordon ably points out, as it was a place where she could practice art "made at the interface of abandon and decorum."
