Resource Sharing & Interlibrary Loan

We’re always seeking ways to get you the materials you need, even if they aren’t available at HCL. Can’t find something in our catalog? We can try to get it from another library or add it to our collection.

Resource Sharing

Your library card gives you access to borrowing most items from any library in the Cambria County Library System. You can also place holds on items from specific libraries with whom we have a lending partnership. Here’s how it works:

  1. From the library’s catalog, use the “Library” drop-down menu to select Cambria County Library System.
  2. Type in your keywords and click “Search”.
  3. If the item is available in another library in Cambria County, it should display in the search results based on your keyword search.
  4. Once you’ve found the item you would like to request, click “Place Hold” and continue the hold process as normal.

If none of the libraries in the Cambria County Library System have the item you’re looking for, you can repeat the steps above and choose one of the following options in the “Library” drop-down menu:

Blair County Library System
Lackawanna County Library System

Some libraries put restrictions on outside holds for their new items, so it may take up to 90 days for new items to become available through resource sharing.

We’ll let you know when the item is ready for pick up. Items usually arrive at Highland within 5 business days.

Interlibrary Loans

If you still can’t find an item, you can request it through our statewide Interlibrary Loan system.

Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is a service that allows patrons to borrow materials from other libraries across Pennsylvania and beyond. If you can’t locate a specific item through our catalog, the library will attempt to get those items through ILL. The library has access to over 29 million records from more than 6,500 libraries through ILL networking.

If you would like to request materials through ILL please ask for assistance at the circulation desk or call 266-5610 ext. 302. You can also fill out an ILL Request form and return it to the library in person or by mail. This service is available at all Cambria County Library System member libraries. We will contact you when your ILL is ready to pick up. We will hold an ILL for two weeks after contacting you before we send it back to its home library.

To renew Interlibrary loans, call 814-266-5610 ext. 302. Interlibrary loan items can be identified by the green slip taped to the front. Please contact the library one week before the due date listed on the green slip to renew, so that we have time to contact the lending library and request your renewal. Approval of interlibrary loan renewals is at the discretion of the lending library, and not all interlibrary loan renewals are approved.

Still can’t find what you’re looking for?

If you’re a library cardholder hunting for a new release or another item that you can’t find anywhere else, fill out our purchase suggestion form. Please note we can’t consider suggestions for an item more than 3 months in advance of its release date, and we may not always order the item you request depending on our budget and the library’s collection needs.
